Welcome to the beginners guide to creating your own e-liquid.
Creating our own e-liquid can seem overwhelming at first, but it's way easier than it looks. It’s just four ingredients, simple math (with the help of our e-liquid calculator) and a little patience. This Make My Vape guide walks you through what you need and how to do it step by step.
A finished bottle of e-liquid has four ingredients:
VG & PG (base) – VG and PG are the liquids that carry taste and produce vapour. PG (propylene glycol) has a thin viscosity and carries flavour and gives that throat feel. VG (vegetable glycerine) is thicker and makes clouds. You mix them in a ratio you like. Some users prefer mixing 50VG 50PG for balanced taste, minimal cloud production and to be used in Mouth To Lung devices. Some vapers enjoy 30PG 70VG for big clouds and smoother hits, these e-liquids are mainly used in low resistance pod/coil systems known as 'Sub-ohm' vaping. All of the flavour concentrates at Make My Vape come in PG base.

Flavour concentrates – Flavour concentrates give your e-liquid taste. They are added to your mix in small percentage amounts and all are PG based at Make My Vape. Brands like Capella, Flavor West and The Flavor apprentice have great flavour options. Flavorverse is a great concentrate brand, if you want concentrates that are pre mixed offering multile flavourings in one bottle.
Nicotine (optional) – Nicotine will raise the nicotine strength of your mix.
You choose how much you want to add.
Safety measures are needed when dealing with Nicotine.
Syringes or pipettes for measuring. A beaker or cup to mix in. A bottle to store the finished e-liquid. Gloves are a must if you are using nicotine so it doesn’t touch your skin and scales if you prefer to measure by weight. Please view our blog post for further information The DIY Mixers Tool Kit
VG/PG ratio – This decides how your e-liquid feels and tastes. More PG means stronger taste and more throat hit. More VG means thicker e-liquid and thicker clouds.
If you prefer vaping Mouth to lunge style, we recommend going for a 50VG 50PG mix, if you prefer a more cloudy style vape, we recommend a higher VG blend like 30PG 70VG.
Flavour percentage – Most DIY recipes have between 5% and 20% flavour.
We do not recommed going above 20% of flavouring. If you want to mix a single flavour concentrate, our website will explain the recommended percentages and then its trial and error/personal taste to adjust. Nicotine strength – Nicotine Strength is how strong the nicotine is in every ml. For example 3mg means 3 mg of nicotine per ml of e-liquid. For more information check out our blog all about Nicotine.
This part scares new mixers but it doesn’t need to. You use our E-Liquid Calculator to figure out exactly how much of each ingredient to add. It does the maths for you.
Go to the E-Liquid Calculator page, then:

Enter how much e-liquid you want to make (for example 60ml).

Choose your VG/PG ratio (like 70VG/30PG).

Set how strong you want your nicotine (for example 3 mg).

Add your flavour concentrates and the percentage they need to be.
The calculator will tell you the exact numbers for PG, VG, flavours and nicotine. Use those numbers when you measure and mix.
Step 1: Pick a recipe
Choose one of our Make My Vape recipes or make your own. Decide what VG/PG, ratio, flavour percentage, nicotine strength (if required) to be added.
Step 2: Gather tools and ingredients
Carefully lay out all your mixing accessories, VG PG, Nicotine and flavourings on a clean work space. If you plan to use Nicotine please make sure you are wearing gloves.
Step 3: Measure PG and VG
Now it is time to start mixing your e-liquid. Use your e-liquid calculator values to measure out the right amount of PG and VG into your mixing beaker. Start with the PG first.
Step 4: Add flavour
Add the flavour concentrates one at a time. Use a new or throughly clean out the syringe between flavours so flavours don’t mix.
Step 5: Add nicotine (if you are using it)
Measure the amount the calculator tells you.
If you aren’t using nicotine just skip this step.
Step 6: Mix and bottle
Give everything a good stir. Then pour your mix into a clean bottle and seal the cap and give it a good vigorous shake for a few minuites.
Step 7: Steep your juice
This part is one of the most crucial steps to e-liquid mixing. You now need to Steep your e-liquid. Your e-liquid needs to sit in a cool dark place for 1-2 weeks dependant on the flavours used. This lets the flavours develop and taste much better. Many people see best results. Our make My Vape has recommened steep times.
Below is an example recipe Cherry Blast by Flavor West. This recipe will only use on single concentrate and will be mixed at 15%. The ratio will be 30PG and 70VG. Nicotine 3mg and 60ml in size.
