Batch Testing Basics: Start Small, Scale Smart

When you are experimenting with your new e-liquid flavours or tweaking one of your favourite recipes, jumping straight into mixing a big batch can sometimes be a bit risky. You might waste precious ingredients on something that just doesn’t taste correct. That’s where batch testing comes in. Mixing small amounts, usually between 5ml and 10ml you can experiment without the worry.

Making a 10ml bottle at home can be very affordable when you use your own ingredients and much cheaper than the pre mixed e-liquid you would pay for in a vape shop or website. That means you have the freedom to test out different flavour combos, tweak ratios and perfect your recipe without breaking the bank.

Plus, using smaller bottles (10ml) they tend to steep faster, so you can get a good idea of how your mix tastes in just a few days, instead of waiting weeks for a full batch to mature.

Batch testing in a small quantity also takes the stress out of mixing. Instead of risking a whole 100ml bottle on a flavour that might not work, you can try several small variations side by side and quickly find the best one. It’s efficient, affordable and a great way to build confidence in your mixing skills.

Let's dive into an example of test batching. For examples, let's say you want to try a Sweet Strawberry Vanilla mix with 50VG 50PG, 3mg nicotine and 10% total flavouring. Using the Make My Vape E-Liquid Calculator and you can get your results in ml, Grams (weight) and percentage. This example is ml.

  • Nicotine (72mg/ml PG): 0.42ml

  • PG: 3.58ml

  • VG: 5.00ml

  • Flavourings (Strawberry 6%, Vanilla 4%): 0.6ml and 0.4ml

By weight, Pop your empty 10ml bottle on the scale, add each ingredient start with VG, then PG, nicotine and finally your chosen flavourings. Cap it tight, give it a good shake for 30 to 60 seconds, and you’re done!

One of the best things about batch testing is trying out variations.

Mix three bottles with slight flavour changes:

  • Test A: Strawberry 6%, Vanilla 4%

  • Test B: Strawberry 5%, Vanilla 5%

  • Test C: Strawberry 4%, Vanilla 6%

Label each bottle, let them steep safely for 48–72 hours, then taste them side by side. You will be surprised how even a 1% difference can change the whole experience.

Whether it’s a notebook, spreadsheet or labels on the bottles, always note down your recipe details, batch number, date, percentages, steep time and your tasting notes. That way, when you hit a clear winner, you can recreate it perfectly again in large amount or make even better mixes next time.

Once you find your perfect recipe, scaling up is easy.
